Glycol Chiller System – 5 things you should know

Introduction:

This is one of the most popular draught beer systems and is an excellent choice for any long-draw dispensing setup due to its ability to maintain the cooler temperature and deliver cold beer at long distances. In a glycol-cooled remote beer system, the beer in the keg is kept cold by the cold air in the walk-in cooler or built in cellar. The beer in the beer lines, beer tower, and taps are kept cold by the continual flow of glycol through the coolant lines designed to take the cold temperature of draught beer from the walk-in cool room and transport it to the dispensing point at a consistent low temperature.

What is a Glycol System?

The glycol chiller system starts with a chilled tank of Glycol, sometimes referred to antifreeze. Maintained at a constant temperature the glycol is pumped in separate lines beside beer/beverage lines. This method ensures the beer/beverage is at the optimum temperature when it enters the punters glass.

How does a Glycol System work?

Simply put, food grade Glycol is cooled in a tank usually located in a cool room or walk in fridge.  Lines of chilled glycol are insulated alongside the beer/beverage lines inside the python tubing.  Python tubing is a collection of beer/beverage lines together with glycol lines and surrounded by thick insulation that both prevents energy loss and protects the lines from damage.  This Python can be run over long distances and takes the beer from the cool room to the tap safely.  The glycol returns to the tank through a return line to ensure there is no waste.

What are the benefits of the Glycol System?

  1. The system can run any beverage from cool room to tap;
  2. It can maintain temperature to within +/- 1oC up to 150 metres;
  3. Its antifreeze properties mean it will not freeze in the lines;
  4. It can be run on multiple lines in the same venue;
  5. Can last a long time making is very cost effective.

What are the environmental benefits of Glycol?

  1. Glycol has no health risks to users or handlers and is completely food safe;
  2. Prevents freezing in the lines and costly fixes;
  3. Cooling the glycol does not produce heat or noise or emissions;
  4. Glycol resists corrosion, algae and bacteria in chiller components;
  5. Glycol is extremely energy efficient

Who should use a Glycol System?

The glycol chiller system can be adapted to any venue size.  From a smaller 2 tap system to a stadium sized 250 tap system the glycol chiller system is perfect. Its unique features are at the most obvious when a cool room or fridge is over 1-2 metres from the tap points.  If you would like to know how a glycol chiller system could work for you contact the Andale team of professional installers.  Andale manufacture in Australia.
